DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The New Rochelle Owner’s Guide

We stock and install DuraFlex-compatible chimney caps for most DuraFlex liner systems, with typical installed prices running $340-$620 in New Rochelle depending on liner diameter and flue configuration. Most replacements are completed in a single visit, and we carry common sizes on every truck. Homeowners usually discover the problem during their first fire of the season, when smoke backs up or water spots appear on the fireplace face, or when a Level-2 camera inspection reveals rust streaks running down a stainless cap that has separated from its collar.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex chimney caps are not universal. They mate to specific liner diameters and termination styles across the DuraFlex SW (smooth-wall), DW (double-wall), and Pro series lines. The collar diameter must match your liner exactly, a 6-inch cap forced onto a 5½-inch liner will leak and eventually blow off in a coastal wind.

To identify yours, check the stamped rating plate on the liner itself, usually visible at the top of the chase or with a mirror. The part number prefix tells the story: DFC for standard caps, DFC-PRO for the reinforced line rated above 2,000 degrees. We see a lot of the DFC-625 and DFC-800 series in New Rochelle’s 1920s Colonials, where original clay liners were retrofitted with DuraFlex in the 1990s and early 2000s.

We install OEM DuraFlex caps and quality aftermarket equivalents from Gelco and Olympia Chimney when the application allows. The aftermarket route saves roughly $80-$120 on parts without sacrificing fit, though we default to OEM on Pro-series liners where the higher heat rating matters. Hearthstone Chimney Co. is an independent service provider, not affiliated with DuraFlex.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Rust streaks on the chase or roof. DuraFlex caps are 304 or 316 stainless, but the spot-welded collar joint can fail after 12-15 years of freeze-thaw cycling in New Rochelle’s coastal climate. Once moisture breaches that seam, the cap rusts from the inside out, and the stain on your shingles is the first visible clue.
  • Smoke puffing back into the room on startup. A cap with a clogged or corroded spark arrestor mesh restricts draft. The mesh on DuraFlex caps is finer than some competitors, which protects against ember escape but clogs faster with creosote if the liner is not swept annually.
  • The cap is visibly tilted, loose, or missing entirely. High winds off Long Island Sound, especially in the Beechmont and Wykagyl neighborhoods, can torque a cap whose clamp screws have backed off. A tilted cap funnels water directly into the flue instead of shedding it.
  • Water in the firebox or rust on the damper. This means the cap’s crown seal or storm collar has failed, or the cap was never properly counter-flashed during original installation. Water and chimney liners do not mix, it accelerates corrosion and can damage the transition below.
  • Animal nesting debris or bird droppings in the firebox. A missing or damaged cap is an open invitation. Squirrels in particular will chew the mesh on older DuraFlex caps to gain entry, and their nests block draft and create fire hazards.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Component Price Range (New Rochelle)
DuraFlex OEM cap (parts only) $140 - $280
Quality aftermarket equivalent $75 - $160
Labor: removal, fit, seal, test $180 - $280
Stainless storm collar (if needed) $35 - $55
Typical total installed $340 - $620

What drives the range: liner diameter (6-inch vs. 8-inch), whether the chase top needs reframing or sealing, and whether we are matching an existing DuraFlex termination or converting from a failed generic cap. We photograph the condition before we quote, and the number we give is the number on the invoice. The cap itself carries the manufacturer’s warranty, and our installation is covered by the 90-Day Done Right Promise, in writing, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

There is a safe middle ground. You can check whether the cap is merely loose, a few turns on the clamp screws with a socket wrench may reseat it. You can also sight up the flue with a flashlight to spot obvious mesh blockage or missing sections.

Where DIY ends: working at roof height on a pitched surface, handling a cap that may be hot from recent use, and diagnosing whether the failure is the cap itself or the liner termination beneath it. We have found cracked DuraFlex top plates that looked like cap problems until the camera went down. A cap installed on a damaged termination will fail again in a season. We carry common DuraFlex sizes on every truck, and most swaps are done in under two hours. Call (516) 927-2678 for a free estimate.
