HeatShield Damper Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Damper Repair: The New Rochelle Owner’s Guide

HeatShield damper repair in New Rochelle typically runs $280-$520 installed, and we stock the common HeatShield damper assemblies and hardware kits on our truck for same-day completion. Most jobs take 90 minutes to two hours once we’re on site. Homeowners usually discover the problem on the first cold night in November, when they pull the chain and the damper plate hangs crooked, grinds, or won’t seal at all.

Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

HeatShield builds dampers for two distinct product lines, and matching the right hardware matters. The HeatShield Cerfractory line uses a heavier cast-aluminum damper plate with a 13-inch maximum throat width, while the HeatShield Pro series shifts to a lighter stainless pivot assembly with a 16-inch maximum. The model number is stamped on the damper frame’s left side, visible with a flashlight and a mirror. If the stamp’s corroded, measure the throat opening width and note whether the pivot pin rides in a cast bracket or a stamped stainless saddle.

We carry OEM HeatShield replacement pivot pins, spring assemblies, and full damper frames. For discontinued Cerfractory units manufactured before 2016, we source quality aftermarket equivalents from Copperfield and Famco that match the original geometry without the OEM markup. The aftermarket pivot springs we use are rated for 15,000 open-close cycles, same as HeatShield’s spec. One compatibility gotcha: the Pro series post-2019 uses a 5/16-inch pivot pin, while earlier Pro units and all Cerfractory units use 1/4-inch. Mix the two and the damper chatters itself loose in a season.

Hearthstone Chimney Co. is an independent service provider, not affiliated with HeatShield.

Signs Your HeatShield Damper Repair Is Failing

  • The damper plate drops open an inch after you close it. The torsion spring in the pivot assembly has fatigued. HeatShield’s spring is buried inside the cast bracket, so you can’t see the break, but the symptom is unmistakable. In New Rochelle’s coastal humidity, we see this at eight to twelve years, sooner than the inland spec sheets suggest.
  • You feel a cold draft even with the damper “closed.” The plate has warped or the frame seal has eroded. HeatShield’s cerfractory plate resists heat but not the slow acid etching from decades of sulfate-laden flue gas, especially in older Beechmont neighborhood chimneys with shallow flues.
  • The chain pulls hard, then snaps free. The linkage fork has corroded at the pin joint. Salt air accelerates this, and once the fork cracks, the whole linkage drops into the firebox.
  • You hear metal grinding when opening or closing. The pivot pin has walked out of its bracket, usually because the retaining clip corroded away. Left alone, the pin scores the bracket bore and you need the full frame replaced, not just the pin.
  • The damper won’t open fully, choking the fire. Creosote has built up on the plate’s top edge, or the frame has shifted from deteriorating mortar. HeatShield’s low-profile design leaves little clearance for error, so even 1/4-inch of buildup binds the action.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Repair Type Price Range What’s Included
Pivot pin & spring replacement $280-$360 OEM or matched aftermarket pin, spring, retaining clips; labor; camera inspection
Full damper frame replacement $420-$520 HeatShield-compatible frame, plate, hardware; refractory mortar bedding; labor
Linkage fork & chain repair $180-$240 Stainless fork, chain, clevis pin; adjustment; labor

The range depends on three things: whether we can reuse the existing frame, how far the chimney throat is from the firebox opening (tight fireplaces take longer), and whether the surrounding mortar needs repointing to seat the new frame square. We price everything upfront before touching a tool. The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice. Every HeatShield damper repair carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise, in writing, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground. You can inspect the damper plate for visible warping, check that the chain isn’t kinked, and verify the throat is clear of debris. Do this with the firebox cold and a strong flashlight.

What you should not do: attempt to replace the pivot spring or remove the damper frame. The spring is under tension, and the frame sits in refractory mortar that must be cut and repacked to factory spec. A dropped damper plate in a lined flue can crack the liner. We’ve retrieved three from the smoke chamber in the last two years, all from DIY attempts that seemed straightforward at 10 a.m. and required a full liner inspection by noon.
